Telegram introduces a new way to import chats from WhatsApp

As the fallout around WhatsApp’s intended policy changes continues – and while users continue to flock to alternative chat apps – Telegram has unveiled a new way to import WhatsApp chat histories on iOS.

While the feature hasn’t been made public on Android as yet, iOS users can now import their chat histories from other chat app such as Line and KakaoTalk.

As of now, iOS users can import their WhatsApp chats into version 7.4.1 of Telegram and continue their conversation as long as both transacting parties has a Telegram account to begin with.

To import a chat into Telegram, users can open the relevant conversation on whatsApp, tap the contact or group name at the top menu, select Export Chat, and then select the option to share to Telegram. Thereafter, users will need to select a Telegram chat to export the messages into. Messages that are imported will receive a label identifying them as such.

The move is an aggressive one, and will make the migration easier for WhatsApp users abandoning ship. Earlier this month, Telegram announced it had reached over 500 million active users worldwide.

The news also comes amidst WhatsApp’s own scramble to retain its users. The firm has elected to postpone the introduction of its new privacy policy, and has even taken to broadcasting its own in-app Statuses to elaborate on its privacy features.
