LG to debut a bendable OLED TV at CES 2021

As is the case every year, LG will bring its latest and greatest in TV technology to the Consumer Electronics Show. This year it will be an online-only event, of course, but we still expect to see some wild concepts at the show. Among those will be LG, who will be showing off a new 48-inch 4K “Bendable CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) display” that you can change between a flat screen and a curved screen at the press of a button.

The thinking is that the display can function both as a high-end television when flat, and a top notch gaming monitor when curved, which is the optimal form factor for immersion. It will also have the ability to have different severities of curving, which means it will be able adjust the curve according to the distance you are sitting from the display. The OLED display can have up to a 1,000mm radius.

While we’ve seen the beginnings of this technology in concepts before, this will be the first time a fully functioning product is debuted. The CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) is a brand new technology we haven’t seen before, though. It has a 0.6mm-thick exciter underneath, which turns the entire OLED panel into a speaker. Not needing to build a dedicated speaker into the TV panel means you have a slimmer display. With the audio emanating directly from the screen, it adds to the immersion for both the gaming experience as well as the video viewing.

According to LG the display will support a variable refresh rate anywhere from 40Hz to 120Hz. It is definitely at the lower end for a gaming monitor, with most high-end monitors delivering at least 144Hz refresh rates, and even 240Hz or 360Hz in extreme cases.
