This is the first smartphone with an under-display camera

Shrinking bezels have been the name of the game in the smartphone industry in recent years. Hence, the advent of smartphones with no need for a notch or punch-hole cut out in the display is a welcomed development. ZTE will launch the Axon 20 5G on December 21st, which is the world’s first phone with an under-display camera.

The device will initially launch in the UK, European Union, Japan and South Korea. We don’t have an indication of pricing yet, but the company will announce it within the next several days.

The party piece is that large 6.92-inch FHD+ OLED screen that is uninterrupted by the 32MP selfie-camera. It is hidden underneath the display, which uses a combination of materials, display syncing and a “special matrix” to hide the selfie cam when it is not needed and clear up the glass in front of it when it is.

Otherwise the Axon 20 5G is a relatively unremarkable device, thoroughly sitting in the mid-range. It runs on the Snapdragon 765G chip with 8GB of RAM. The display does have a quicker 90Hz refresh rate, however, which is always well received.

On the rear it will have a 64MP main rear camera, an 8MP ultra-wide, a 2MP macro cam and a 2MP depth sensor. The battery is relatively large, at 4,220mAh, but with that large OLED display (with quick refresh rate) and 5G the battery life is likely to be average at best.

We are sure to see similar displays from other devices in 2021, although it may only be standard in all flagships in 2022. Not all companies have done the research and development to build such a display. Most smartphone manufacturers will likely buy it from suppliers who have, such as Samsung and LG.
