The day we’ve been yearning for when we have fully bezel-less, all-screen smartphones could be around the corner. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE is planning to launch the world’s first smartphone that has an under-display selfie camera, meaning there is no more need for notches or hole-punch cut-outs in the display.

The Chinese-based company Visionex is said to have finalised the technology and is ready for production. It is expected to come embedded in the flagship phones of various manufacturers next year.
According to the very brief announcement from ZTE, “Innovation has no bound,” and ZTE is “a step closer to” their dream. They’ve announced that they will “show [their] hand” (like a poker hand is revealed) which is “the first phone with an under display camera in the world.” They’ve also used the hashtag “#camerathatdisappears.”
It appears that the ZTE Axon 20 5G could be the first phone to sport the technology. They also shared a screenshot to reveal that the State Radio Regulation of China (SRRC) recently certified a ZTE device with model number ‘A2021’, which will apparently launch as the Axon 20 5G. There’s no immediate word on its specs or features, but we hope to know more in the days ahead.
While under-display camera technology is indeed possible in this day and age, its effectiveness is still far from perfect – we’ve seen working prototypes from other companies that still left a lot to be desired in quality of the imagery. Hopefully those challenges has been sorted out, because people will definitely not be keen on the technology if they can’t take their daily stylised selfie with beauty mode, portrait mode and good enough quality for the Gram.
