BioWare will release a new Mass Effect game alongside the remastered trilogy

For months we have heard rumours of new Mass Effect experiences – they were true, and then some. The long-expected remastered version of the original Mass Effect trilogy has now been confirmed by BioWare, called the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, but surprisingly they had more in store.

At their N7 Day event, BioWare have also said that the “next chapter of the Mass Effect universe” is in development – that is, a brand new game.

The remastered Legendary Edition will bring higher frame rates, “beautiful visual enhancements” and 4K resolution support. It will include the three games in the original trilogy, of course, as well as all the DLC launched for these games and some new “promo” content. It is expected to be launched in Q2 2021 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with additional “targeted enhancements” for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

We don’t have any real information about the new Mass Effect game or when we can expect it, with BioWare making it clear that the game is still in the early stages of development. According to executives they are taking the project very seriously, with a “veteran team” tasked with its development.

The first ME game launched after that initial trilogy story arch was Mass Effect Andromeda, which didn’t capture the hearts and minds of fans like the other games. It had some glaring issues, including technical flaws and a lack of execution when it came to the story telling.

We eagerly await more news about the new ME game. After the disappointment of Andromeda it is likely to be a brand new story, even potentially more closely linked to the original trilogy rather than being tacked on to the new galaxy.
