Microsoft to finally shut down Wunderlist

When Microsoft acquired Wunderlist, the to-do productivity app, back in 2015, the writing was on the wall. It was understood form the get go that the best functionality and features from Wunderlist would be integrated into Microsoft’s productivity suite, more specifically their To Do application. Interestingly, it will almost be 5 years since the acquisition when they finally shut down Wunderlist for good in May 2020.

As of 6 May 2020 Wunderlist to-do’s will no longer sync, but users will be able to import their content into the much revamped To Do app from Microsoft. There will surely be Wunderlist loyalists that are very disappointed, but you have to commend Microsoft for leaving the app functioning as long as it did after the acquisition was completed.

Most of Wunderlist’s most useful features have been built into To Do, like list groups, file attachments, sharing and task assignments and list groups. In recent months, additional features like new backgrounds, smart lists and a daily planner that offers smart suggestions of tasks to finish have been added. In this latest feature announcement, in September 2019, there were more hints that Wunderlist would soon be shutting down.

As you can imagine, it is also a hard pill to swallow for the creators of such a successful application as Wunderlist. Creator and CEO Christian Reber took to Twitter to express his deep remorse over the closure. He wasn’t overly negative about the move by Microsoft, simply expressing the love and care that went into the building and growth of the application. He even hinted that he would buy it back afterwards should Microsoft allow it.

In preparation for the closure of Wunderlist, Microsoft is no longer accepting any new accounts. They are rather directly them to To Do directly and introducing them to a similar experience. If you are currently a Wunderlist user, the switch is simple enough. To Do users can access the iOS, Android, Mac, PC or web app to use the Wunderlist importer. You also can choose to export lists from Wunderlist to To Do from the Wunderlist app, if you prefer.
