Microsoft’s new Surface laptop – apparently designed to compete with Google’s line of Chromebooks – has been outed in a new series of leaks.
We’ve previously covered rumours that Microsoft’s next Surface Book might do away with the hinge that so defined it, and now new leaks have seemingly confirmed that the company’s sequel product – or an entirely new device on its own – will arrive in the form of a conventional laptop.
Leaks have revealed the presence of a Surface-branded laptop that will be offered to compete with the rising prevalence of Chromebooks, and that the device will run on a new version of Windows, dubbed Windows 10 ‘S’.

Windows 10 S could refer to Windows 10 Cloud – a lightweight build of Windows that is designed to compete with Google’s Chrome OS. Windows 10 Cloud offers a stripped down experience for consumers to use applications built in Microsoft’s Windows Universal App environment.

Microsoft’s Surface laptop is accordingly rumoured to sport a 13.5″ PixelSense display and will taper to a base that measures in at just 10mm at its front. The device is expected to arrive in four colours – namely Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold.
It remains to be seen whether the Surface laptop could indeed be the intended replacement for Microsoft’s Surface Book, or whether the product will serve as a unique entry in Microsoft’s burgeoning Surface line.
