To celebrate the 12th anniversary of Google Maps, Matteo Archondis has created an ‘around-the-world’ hyperlapse tour constructed from the service.
Can you believe that Google Maps has been around for twelve years? While it might seem like we’ve always used the internet to map our way home and back, that hasn’t always been the case.
In a video that shows just how powerful a utility Maps has become, YouTuber Matteo Archondis has constructed an impressive around-the-world journey in hyperlapse out of screenshots from Google Maps, Google Street View, and Google Earth.

In conversation with PetaPixel, Archondis stated that his aim was to celebrate the 12th anniversary of Google’s Maps service and “show the potential tools we have to discover the world around us, even if we can’t afford to travel to places far away from home.”
According to Digital Trends, Archondis spent two days compiling over 3,300 screenshots for the video, while post-processign took over two weeks to complete.
While the video naturally isn’t a complete stop-over trip to every major city of the world – sadly enough, no African city makes its way into the video – the piece is an inspiring reminder of how we can use technology to explore the vastness of the natural world around us.
