Alcatel’s A5 LED – launched at Mobile World Congress – is the first smartphone to include an LED cover that can light up to depict notifications and more.
Sometimes a modern smartphone just isn’t enough. We’re all admittedly slaves to the battery of notifications we receive each day, and some of us use a tiny LED light for that purpose. Alcatel, then, has come up with a great idea; you see, they’ve turned the average smartphone into what we like to call a “Death Star”.
Of course, we’re not referring to the Death Star for its propensity to destroy planets. Rather, we’re referring to its enormous green laser which, a little like the Alcatel A5 LED, is great cause for a rave.

With the Alcatel A5 LED, users can equip the LED case to not only get a battery of light of notifications – which, as we imagine, will be like lighting up the warning beacons of Gondor – but further show off their personality.
We think Alcatel – by virtue of press release – have summed it up best, so we’ll let them drive things for a bit. With the Alcatel A5 LED, you can:
- “Light up your notifications with a different light show for important incoming calls, messages, alarms, and social media alerts.
- Light up your life using Color Catcher 2.0 by creating unique LED cover patterns and themes for a different look every day.
- Light up your imagination with an eye-catching personalized light show.
- Light up your music, with light shows that move with your tunes, switching with a simple shake.”
Beyond its sassy LED cover, the A5 is more or less another budget entry attempting to catch the hype train; there’s a sprinkling of modest specs which include an octa-core Cortex A53 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable internal storage, a 2,800mAh battery, and an 8-megapixel primary and 5-megapixel camera setup.
In case you were wondering, both of those cameras include LED flashes for a little extra light… not that you’ll be needing it.
All in all, we’ve got to give Alcatel some credit for thinking outside of the box here. The ability to add an LED case for notifications and/or personalization is a novel idea, and we have to say that with this in hand, we’d feel far more comfortable demanding the sum of…
ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
