Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, which is Apple’s largest assembly contractor, has announced that it is seeking to expand operations to the United States.
US President-Elect Donald Trump made several outlandish promises during his election campaign, but none have provided more frenzy in the consumer technology sector than his intent to see Apple manufacture its products in the United States.
Now, Foxconn – Apple’s largest assembly contractor – has announced that it is seeking to expand its operations to the United States. The news comes on the back of Trump’s private conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook, wherein the president-elect offered Apple a ‘very large tax cut‘ if it should choose to produce its products in its home country.

The announcement – oddly enough – was made by Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Japanese telecom SoftBank, with an image that showed both SoftBank’s and Foxconn’s logos.
While it is unclear how SoftBank could be involved with Foxconn’s US expansion, it is known that Terry Gou – the CEO of Foxconn – is a long-time friend and financial collaborator with Son.
It presently remains unknown to what degree the company will proceed to invest into US operations and precisely what for – though one could likely assume that the announcement is in some way tied to Apple’s recent talks with both its assembly contractors, in which the company reportedly canvassed Foxconn about its willingness to move its operations to the United States.
Apple presently makes use of Foxconn and Pegatron to assemble its products, though it has been reported that the latter company has not shown any interest in expanding or moving its operations to the United States, citing the vast costs involved to do so.
