Remember Microsoft Paint? Redmond’s tool for budding artists everywhere is being redesigned from the ground up for Windows 10.
Microsoft Paint, the tool that many millennials spent hours in drawing lines and then filling them with colour, is back. Microsoft has inadvertently revealed through a leaked video that it is rebuilding one of its most famous programs for a Windows 10 release.
While “Paint Preview” will feature all the familiar features found in the traditional version of the app, the updated program will feature something new – support for 3D objects.

What does that mean? Essentially, it means that not only will creators be able to use Paint to create .JPG or .BMP masterpieces, it means that content creators will be able to craft 3D materials that one might find in an augmented reality setting – think Pokemon Go or Microsoft’s own HoloLens mixed reality headset.
The Verge reports that the updated Windows 10 version of the program will run as a Universal Windows app, and apparently doesn’t include layering support that one would find in programs such as Photoshop. However, that feature could have been added since the early preview of Paint leaked.
Still, users will be able to crop images, insert text, and use a variety of brushes and pencils to annotate images and 3D shapes.
Microsoft could be readying the new version of the app for debut at its October event, where the program could feasibly headline alongside new Surface Pro and HoloLens devices. The Redmond company is reportedly preparing to pitch its hardware lineup to creative types, with Paint at the center.
