WhatsApp has unveiled a host of new camera features, which includes the ability to write on draw on images as one would on Snapchat.
WhatsApp’s busy year shows no signs of abating; earlier this year the Facebook instant-messaging app unveiled end-to-end encryption as well as the ability to leave voicemail. Now the company has brought another highly anticipated feature to general release; the ability to write and draw as well as add emoji to captured images.
The update, which is presently rolling out across the world, offers new editing tools which users can employ once they have captured an image within the app. Once an image has been captured and a preview is offered before users send a message, they’ll now have the option to add emoji or text – the latter will arrive in a variety of colours and font styles.

Further, users will be able to draw through a new tool that’ll turn ordinary images into works of art – depending on your skill with a virtual brush.
If that wasn’t enough, the WhatsApp camera will now support front-facing flash, which will – as you might imagine – serve to illuminate your next selfie. That addition comes alongside the ability to zoom while one records video, and to switch between the front and rear-facing cameras on your smartphone by double-tapping on your screen in real time.
WhatsApp has clarified that the new camera features will begin rolling out across Android smartphones around the world today, while and iOS release will follow shortly.
The update precedes the reveal of other highly anticipated features, such as the ability to make video calls in the app.
