Snapchat, now Snap Inc, has unveiled Spectacles; a $130 USD set of glasses with a built-in video camera that has a 115-degree lens.
Snapchat has had a busy weekend; fresh from rebranding itself as Snap Inc (its famous app will retain its name), the company has unveiled Spectacles; a $130 USD pair of glasses that come equipped with a wide video camera.
While the project might be reminiscent of Google’s abruptly ended Glass project, Spectacles are for an entirely different purpose. Rather than serving up information on-the-go, the product will instead tie together with Snapchat’s Memories feature to document happenings as they happen. Content recorded through the glasses will be automatically saved to Memories in a new circular video format through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The captured image or video will be able to play in either landscape or video screen orientation.
Presiding over the announcement of the product, Snap Inc teased that Spectacles would be the perfect way to capture moments as they happened. “Imagine one of your favorite memories. What if you could go back and see that memory the way you experienced it? That‘s why we built Spectacles”, a press statement reads.
The glasses will be able to function on up to a full day on a single charge, though Snap Inc hasn’t announced what connection its glasses will use. It has clarified, however, that Spectacles’ cable alone will be able to provide four full charges once fully souped up.
The glasses certainly have their own style, and at present are only available in one form factor that offers three different colours; black, teal, and coral.
