Google has reportedly launched a new project dubbed ‘Andromeda’ in which it will merge Chrome OS with Android for selected tablets.
When Microsoft first debuted Windows 8, it was clear that the Redmond giant was betting on touch-sensitive devices – such as tablets and hybrid notebooks – to form the future. Now, Google could be headed down a similar path with its ‘Andromeda’ update.
Andromeda refers to a new initiative launched by the Mountain View giant in which Chrome OS and Android would apparently merge, with the end product being offered to various compatible tablets. That news comes on the back of the announcement earlier this year that Chrome OS would be able to run Android apps through the Google Play Store.

Just as Windows 10 offers dedicated desktop and tablet modes, it would appear Andromeda is a means to roll out more sophisticated features to Android-based tablets such as the company’s own Pixel C hybrid.
Rumours indicate that Google is presently testing the update on devices that meet minimum requirements; one of them being the Nexus 9.
References to ‘free-form window management’ paint a telling scene – as Windows 10 grows in popularity (particularly in the market niche of ultra-portable hybrid laptops) it would appear Google is ready to re-assert its dominance. Andromeda, as a Chrome OS/Android merger, could propel the firm to reach a litany of new and extant devices.
The update could pose a strong rival to Windows 10 – while Microsoft’s desktop operating system is well entrenched, it severely lacks a mobile app catalogue to make use of the system’s touch functionality; something Google will be able to respond to in the form of both Chome OS and Android apps.
We expect to hear more at Google’s October 4th event.
