Don't drop your rods: Samsung's smart belt just entered Kickstarter

Samsung’s new connected belt, named Welt, has entered Kickstarter where users can pledge for the unit which tracks one’s waistline and eating habits.

Once again, we turn to Samsung’s weird product naming strategy. While the Galaxy S6 Edge + was certainly a mouthful, we’d argue that a Welt is the last thing we’d want to find on our waist.
Still, that’s what the Korean company has decided to name its latest connected device. Welt is a connected gadget which is capable of tracking a user’s waistline, eating habits, steps, and time spent sitting. Think of it as a fitness tracker placed on one of the most measurable parts of your body (no, gents – not that part).

Welt has officially entered Kickstarter, meaning that users can pledge $119 USD to support Samsung’s latest project. The device is expected to ship next year in January in both standard, Classic and Premium models. The latter options introduce different styles for the discerning customer.

At first glance, Welt looks like any other belt.

Welt will ship alongside a dedicated iOS and Android app which consumers can use to track metrics, and dedicated male and female offerings are catered for. The belt, which charges by Micro USB, will last a claimed 20 days on a single charge through a rechargeable 90mAh battery.
Whatever your thoughts on a connected belt, 393 backers (at the time of writing) have already decided that they’re sold on the concept. Welt has already exceeded its $30,000 USD goal, meaning that the product should, all going well, be upon us by next year.
