Now that the world has had a chance to stop and catch its breath, developers and game enthusiasts alike have managed to get to grips with the core mechanics of Pokemon Go. If you’ve delved deep in the game and are looking to get even better, we’ve got 5 easy-to-use online-based Pokemon Go tools for you to make the most of the title and become the best that no-one ever was.
While the title is still not available locally, we’ve got an easy tutorial to follow from which you can install Pokemon Go on both iOS and Android in South Africa if you haven’t yet joined in on the action.
Ready? Then let’s dive in!
Map out your journey
Pokemon Go can be an incredibly frustrating experience. Just when you think you’ve mapped out your dream Pokewalk to catch an elusive Pikachu, you get to your destination to find an abundance of wild Zubats.
Thankfully, there’s a way to alleviate this frustration. Head on over to Pokemapper.co to view a crowdsourced map of Pokemon around the world. You’ll be able to view specific types of Pokemon in selected areas, as well as contribute to the map yourself should you feel like giving something back.
This is a great way to map out a Pokewalk – if you happen to be looking for hotspots in South Africa’s major metropoles, check out our guide to finding Pokemon in South Africa.
Crunch the numbers
A large component of Pokemon Go is strategically evolving Pokemon to offer the most stamina and power in gym battles. While the logic that acquiring candy to level up your highest rated Pokemon will result in a better candidate is sound, a key decision to make is where to commit your time and energy. Remember, a Gyrados is always worth more than a Pidgeot.
The second of our selection of Pokemon Go tools is based on exactly that premise. If you’d like to map out the evolution of a candidate Pokemon, head over to Pogotoolkit.com, where you’ll find a handy calculator that can predict the CP points of an evolved Pokemon. Using the calculator, you can get a fair idea of any potential gains and see if the candy grind is, in fact, worth the effort.
See the strengths and weaknesses of Pokemon
Most of us are quite content to collect Pokemon based on how they might look, or our attachment to them in-game. However, crafting a talented roster of Pokemon can take a fair amount of insight based off knowledge from the original game.
For the third of our suggested Pokemon Go tools, we recommend taking a look at TheSilphRoad‘s Research directory. From there, you can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each Pokemon based on their attack, defense, and stamina ratings. Using this tool, you can prepare a balanced team of Pokemon which can counter any gym battle.
Put your Pokemon-detecting goggles on
It’s happened to all of us; that elusive Pokemon we’ve been trying to catch for weeks is nearby, but is that dreaded three steps away.
Thankfully, there are ways and means to find exactly what Pokemon are near you, and for how long they’ll be around before they despawn back into Pokemon purgatory.
On PokeVision‘s map, you’ll be able to send your location and send a ping to Niantic’s API every 30 seconds. You’ll be shown a variety of Pokemon nearby, and exactly how long they’ll be around for.

Find fellow Pokemon hunters
Part of the fun of playing Pokemon Go is doing so with friends – especially new ones! To strike up some memorable friendships, give Gochat a try. Gochat is a Pokemon chat app which piggybacks on Facebook to allow you to connect with fellow Pokemon Go players.
If you’d like to find out where a gym leader caught his prized Pokemon, or want to team up with a player nearby, Gochat will allow you to chat with players under their in-game username.
While this can be great fun, remember – groups are safer, and be careful of people you meet online.
Have your say!
