Google's neural network is now producing poetry

Following its latest exploration of literature in the form of romance novels, Google has now tasked its neural network with producing poetry.

Google’s AI engine began reading romance novels earlier this month, and now the company has proceeded to task its neural network with produce poetry as a means of testing what it has learnt.
While the neural network’s reading assignment was focused on making Google’s mobile apps sound more conversational.

Now, the team behind the neural network have given the AI two sentences from the books it has read with the goal of seeing whether it can produce actual poetry.
Unsurprisingly, the end product won’t replace Shakespeare in the hearts and minds of many, though the groundwork laid here could see Google Now, in addition to other core Google services, communicate more naturally.
Google has revealed one result so far from granting the AI a single sentence pertaining to buying groceries – the AI’s poetry reads

“i went to the store to buy some groceries.
i store to buy some groceries.
i were to buy any groceries.
horses are to buy any groceries.
horses are to buy any animal.
horses the favorite any animal.
horses the favorite favorite animal.
horses are my favorite animal.
—
no. he said.
“no,“ he said.
“no,” i said.
“i know,” she said.
“thank you,” she said.
“come with me,” she said.
“talk to me,” she said.
“don‘t worry about it,” she said.”

If you squint really hard, you can just about make out a rhythmic meter.
While the AI’s poetry might be uninspiring at present, the team behind the neural network hopes that the initial results will pave a way forward for the creation of a more useful digital assistant in the vein of Siri, Cortana, or Viv.
