The World Drone Prix took place over the weekend with 15-year old Luke Bannister walking away with the $250,000 USD grand prize!
So you bought yourself a way too expensive drone for Christmas and have already spent way to much on replacement parts because you keep flying into wall? Well here is a some inspirational news for all those amateur drone flyers out there. Luke Bannister, a 15-year old from England, won $250,000 USD by beating out 150 teams in the first World Drone Prix, held in Dubai.
Apparently drone racing is a huge thing! Racers use camera-mounted navigation to steer their craft around a track, through and around different obstacles and over the finish line. You didn’t even have to place 1st – the total prize pool amounted to over $1 million USD – for drone racing!
Luke won by beating home favourites Dubai Dronetek, but for those looking to make their fortune, plenty other races and chances to strike it rich are cropping up. The next big-money event (Drone Worlds’ Champoinship race) will take place in October this year in Hawaii. The first place finisher will walk away with a cool $200,000 USD. So don’t give up mastering those Christmas drones just yet…
