New South African plug could become semi-compulsory

In a drive to increase the adoption rate of the new South African plug, the SABS could make the new electrical standard semi-compulsory.

We wouldn’t blame you if you hadn’t heard of the new South African plug; up until now, SANS 164-2 – or, by its snappier moniker, the ZA Plug – has remained a ‘preferred’ socket standard for home installations. Soon, however, the installation of the plug could become a semi-compulsory measure.
MyBroadband reports that the latest news from the Electrical Contractor’s Association of South Africa has stated that the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) could rule that the ZA Plug be made the semi-compulsory.

This would potentially mean that installations from March 2018 would be required to incorporate at least one socket complying to the design of the ZA Plug.
The ZA Plug shares the same profile as found on the Europlug, but adds in an Earth pin.
Presently, the change is under consideration at the SABS plug and socket workgroup, as well as the Wiring Code workgroup. Should those groups decide to make an amendment, it will be circulated for public comment.
