Ambush marketing a bit too much for you? We walk you through easy steps to remove Windows 10 ads from appearing on your device’s lock screen.
We love Microsoft’s new operating system, but we’re not wild about one very specific thing: the sudden arrival of Windows 10 ads on a device’s lock screen.
Thankfully, de-activating the appearance of such ads is mercifully easy, and we’re here to give you a quick walk-through on how to return your lock screen to its pristine state.

Windows 10’s Spotlight feature is responsible for showing advertisements where usually normal information would appear on your lock screen; now, the feature is instead showing ads directly on the largest and arguably second-most prominent screen on devices upgraded to the new operating system.
For instance. If you’ve seen an ad for Rise of the Tomb Raider appear on your lock screen, you’ve become a victim of Microsoft’s new advertising strategy.
To disable Windows 10 ads, follow these steps:
- Open ‘Settings’ from the Start Menu
- Head to ‘Lock Screen’
- Scroll to ‘Background’, and select either Picture or Slideshow (not Windows Spotlight)
- Once done, scroll down to ‘Get fun facts, tips, tricks and more on your lock screen’ and turn this feature off.
All done! Once completed, your lock screen will be back to its normal state and advertisements will be gone forever.
