The Nextbit Robin, billed as the world’s very first cloud-powered phone, has officially entered Kickstarter to receive consumer backing
While most of us are still getting to grips with the concept of having the computing power of a near-PC in our back pocket, a new Kickstarter campaign has been launched for the very first cloud-based smartphone: enter the Nextbit Robin.
What differentiates a cloud-based smartphone from a regular smartphone? The Nextbit Robin will employ the cloud to store nearly everything on the phone – apps, multimedia, data – ensuring users never run out of storage space.
For those who like to keep files offline, the Robin will accommodate 32GBs of internal storage for files which you’d rather keep close at hand. The Robin will back itself up automatically when charging with an active internet connection, and arrives with a free 100GB cloud space offering.
Nextbit has promised not to charge users for additional storage if they pass the data cap. The Robin, which will include a 5.2″ 1080p display, a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GBs of RAM as well as a 13 megapixel primary camera and a 5 megapixel selfie shooter.
The Nextbit Robin is now available on Kickstarter, where the first 1,000 backers will get the device for $299 USD, while the expected retail price of $399 USD.
The Robin, however, poses an interesting question to South African consumers – is nearly unlimited storage space worth the cost of an effective internet connection?
