Microsoft reneges on OneDrive 'free storage' deal

Microsoft has elected to take sweeping cuts across its storage plans and offerings on OneDrive today, slashing free space down from 15GBs to 5GBs.
Further, the Redmond firm has reneged on its free storage deal, which saw Office 365 Home, Personal and Business subscribers (and up to 5 beneficiaries on the home plan) receive an unlimited amount of storage space on OneDrive.
Now, the firm will offer subscribers a vastly reduced 1TB per subscription, citing that consumers making use of the unlimited storage option have used the service to store high-capacity DVD copies, music, and other entertainment media, rather than use the service for productivity purposes.
The move comes as surprise, as Microsoft, under new CEO Satya Nadella, has emphasized the virility of mobile and online surfaces such as Office 365 and OneDrive over the Windows platform.
Microsoft have also moved to doubling prices for some storage plans; the firm will now charge $2 USD per month for 50GBs of storage, rather than the 100GBs of storage the company presently offers at that price. Further, the 200GB plan at $4 USD per month will be discontinued.
Microsoft have decline to comment, beyond stating that the company will provide users up to a year to remove files that exceed the new limits.
