The wireless charging statement has been bandied about across basically the entire smartphone and gadget industry, but actually true wireless charging for smartphones does not yet exist. Placing your smartphone on a charging pad (which is connected to the wall) isn’t true wireless charging. This might change with Motorola working on something truly groundbreaking.
To be clear though, this is Motorola Solutions we‘re talking about and not Motorola Mobility. So this is still the remaining US company, and not the mobile device section that got sold to Lenovo. Rumours have surfaced that Motorola Solutions are currently in talks with Energous Corporation (developers of WattUp) to develop a new product. What this product does is generate RF energy, which means that the same waves that enable your WiFi signal could serve to charge your phone without you needing to plug in.
The phone would still require a battery of course. The tech will however allow you to walk into a room that has a WattUp-enabled device, and your phone will charge wirelessly (given that you are within range). This may still be the stuff of dreams, however we can clearly see the upside (and monetary benefits) of pushing through this technology sooner rather than later. We’ll keep you posted.
