Microsoft have joined Sony in the latest slew of product leaks in the tech world, as the latest version of the company’s forthcoming Windows 10 Mobile update have been shared across the internet.
The latest beta build of Microsoft’s iterant update to their mobile operating system was revealed through several screenshots, which were posted on Polish Windows forum WiindowsMania.pl.
While the screenshots don’t reveal any new changes to Windows 10 Mobile’s user interface, the screenshots do reveal new updates for connectivity settings, which point to several new features.
In one of the images, under Developer Settings, an option exists to make devices visible for USB connections – meaning that Windows 10 Mobile might offer a new method to enact USB tethering, or potentially offer the ability to allow a user to share files of a home WiFi connection.
Similarly, the second option under Developer Preferences offers the ability to render the device visible for USB EEM connections. EEM, which stands for Ethernet Emulation Module, allows a device to act as an Ethernet interface through a USB connection. This might mean that Windows 10 Mobile might offer a far easier method of creating a mobile hotspot between Windows Phones and PCs, where mobile internet – namely 3G or 4G – connections can be shared.
Based on last week’s news – that Microsoft are readying its first Windows 10 Mobile flagships, the 950 and 950 XL – it would seem that Microsoft’s mobile division is gearing up for a new attempt at the smartphone market.
Between rumours speculating that the company is producing a Surface Phone, and additionally a form of connected accessory that might tie-in with some of the new features revealed today, it would seem that Microsoft remain invested in keeping close continuity between their desktop and mobile architecture.
