Facebook has been on a massive spending spree in months of late, and they aren‘t about to stop anytime soon, as their latest acquisition proves. The Oculus Rift is the only product produced by Oculus VR, a virtual-reality headset meant to change people‘s immersion experiences within games. Facebook is buying to company for $2 billion in cash and stock.
In a post on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg talks at length about how Facebook plans to make Oculus a platform for “completely new kinds of experiences,” with gaming being only the first one. He cites examples such as sitting courtside at a basketball game, getting a doctor consultation anywhere and studying in a virtual classroom.
The VR headset Oculus Rift also stemmed from a campaign on Kickstarter, which was almost two years ago. Ever since then, we have seen many concepts and beta products of the device, most recently as the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) which is now in working order in the form of a beta release.
We are excited to see Facebook delving into different industries and look forward to see where they steer the company. They have vowed ““ as with Instagram and WhatsApp ““ to keep the company running independently.
