Audi reveals Smart Display Android tablet – for your car

Well it sure seems that Audi and Google aren‘t waiting around for anybody after they announced their partnership to bring Android systems into cars a mere two days ago.
Yesterday, we reported on the formation of the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), an alliance spearheaded by Google that will focus on bringing Android-based platforms and tech to various cars in 2014.
In the wake of their announcement, Audi held the attention of the media  by revealing the Audi Smart Display – a 10.2 inch tablet that is specifically designed for in-car use and runs – you guessed it – Android.
The tablet is designed to communicate with your car via an in-car WiFi system. The device will be able to control your car‘s entire infotainment system and will also display important vehicle stats and info.
Of course, it would not be safe for the driver of the car to handle the tablet and keep their eyes on the road. As Audi explained, the tablet is designed to be used by passengers – who can then relay all information to the driver.
The tablet itself is sleek looking – which of course will not disrupt Audi‘s sleek style. The tablet is wrapped in brush aluminum and is powered by a Nvidia Tegra 4 Chip.

No surprise there, as Nvidia is also a founding member of the OAA. We can see a pattern here, guys.
The tab is also said to be crash resistant (although we‘re pretty sure that a serious wreck would most definitely damage the thing) and, to be on parr with other car electronics, will be able to withstand temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius.
Besides being able to control your radio and link you to the web and other media, the Smart Display will feature “˜car essentials‘ such as a speedometer, tachometer, fuel range calculations and it will even alert you if your oil levels or tyre pressure gets low.

This is the first wave of tech born out of the Audi and Google marriage. They‘re definitely not resting on their laurels and is sending a clear message to Apple: we‘ll get there first.
Apple, who announced their iOS for the Car initiative in 2013, will need to pick up their game to get started in this inevitable competition. But who knows, perhaps Apple draws inspiration from the classic tale of the Tortoise and the Hare…
