Xbox One fans around the world have been treated with many new features, among which is Upload Studio. This platform allows gamers to share an exciting gameplay experience in the form of a clip of the action the cloud. Early owners of the One are finding out, though, that profanity used during this clip can land you in some trouble.
Microsoft has confirmed to The Verge that it is handing out temporary Xbox Live bans for select gamers found to be using “excessive” foul language in content created with Upload Studio. Most users aren’t being prevented from playing online games, but instead are barred from attaching Kinect camera recordings to their gameplay clips. In some cases, they’re temporarily blocked from using Upload Studio at all.
Understandably, many users have taken to the web to fume about the consequences, which they point out is nowhere in the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. Others have spoken about their concerns about Skype ““ the question now arises whether profanity used on Skype could get you banned from the service. Luckily, Microsoft have answered this question swiftly: “To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications like Skype chats and calls. We take Code of Conduct moderation via Upload Studio very seriously. We want a clean, safe, and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live.”
I suspect the biggest question regarding this issue is the use of the word “excessive”. I think many people would like to know what Microsoft see as “excessive” ““ how can that be quantified in terms profanity? We will see what further news comes from users and keep you informed for when you receive your brand new Xbox One. We all have a rant in the heat of battle every now and again, don‘t we?
