Google‘s popular online bookstore, Google Play Books, has finally launched in South Africa.
As of today, avid South African readers can enjoy their favourite books, from classics to controversial, all on their Android powered smartphones or tablets.
According to Google, Google Play Books will offer South Africans access to “œhundreds of thousands“ of English language books as of today.
No word yet on whether or not Google Play Books will be offering readers Afrikaans or african-language books in the future However, according to Santiago de la Mora, director for print product partnerships at Google, local publishers might get a chance to sell their books on the platform.
De la Mora said that Google is currently working on providing Google Play Books platform access to South African publishers.
According to de la Mora, Google has been hard at work to ensure markets across the globe can be able to benefit from Google Play Books. They also plan on bringing the platform to other markets worldwide.
Books that are bought from the Google Play store can be read on various different devices. These include Android phones and tablets – books can be bought for smartphones and tablets through the Google Play Books app.
Also, readers using a PC can buy the books through a web browser and iPhone and iPad users will be able to buy their favourite reads via the Google Play Books app for iOS.
Readers can also continue their reading on different devices. The various Google Play Books apps, will synchronise the reader‘s progress an annotations between the different devices.
If you were to start reading on your smartphone, you will be able to pick up right where you left off on your tablet.
E-books are starting to make a big impact on the market, and we sure are happy Google brought their book store to our shores.
