Once again it is the newcomer amongst the mobile networks that seem to shake up the pricing for 3G in SA.

Local mobile broadband provider, 8.ta has today announced reduced broadband rates for its Once-Off Internet packages as well as its Post-paid Internet packages. In addition to this 8ta has also revised its contract terms which now include month to month, 12 and 24 months terms. The month to month contract excludes a modem while the 12 and 24 months contracts will include a modem.
“œToday 8.ta has reduced its broadband pricing, responding to the need for affordable broadband Internet in the South African market. Effectively, 8.ta has tailored these packages to give users the freedom to choose packages that suit their pockets.
“œExisting 8.ta Internet subscribers will automatically be migrated to the new price plans, and after their contracts are up for renewal they can also opt to subscribe on a month to month or 12 months contract basis,“ says Managing Executive of Telkom Mobile, Amith Maharaj.
Once the monthly recurring Post-paid Internet package has been depleted, users will be charged an out-of-bundle rate of R 0.30 per MB while the Once-off Internet subscribers will be charged an out-of bundle rate of R1.00 per MB. Compare this to other mobile broadband solutions out there that still get charged more. For example Vodacom charges R1 per out of bundle meg for contract users, and R2 (!!!!) for prepaid users.
Post-paid and Once-Off Internet subscribers will also benefit from the following value added services:

  • Free 8.ta email account with 5GB mailbox giving users access to 25GB online storage and free access to online Microsoft Office suite, which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Send 5 SMSs daily and receive 50 FREE SMSs to use on that day.
  • 8·ta also provides users with a “˜safety net‘ to check their balances on the self-service portal and via USSD and make out of bundle purchase decisions in real-time, using the redirect functionality.
  • Users will also receive a free call-out and support services with every 3G data modem purchased.

Now we have to wait and see to see if the other cellular networks will match this offering. Post-paid Internet Bundles ““ Month to Month contract:

  1. I thought it
would be competitive when I read the dramatic headline.
    MTN Uncapped
Light, which might continue > 31 Jan 2012 with no throttling, is R289/month,
    unlimited?

    1. blah blah blah, I have lost R150 trying to buy the 2+1GB deal! and their customer service (call centre) sucks!! never ever again…

  2. Um…. Im sorry how is this cheap!?! Their 5 gig package is more expensive than CELL C. CELL C 5 gig with wireless router R300 pm over 12 months, 8TA 5 gig with rubbish USB modem R 715 over 5 months. And lets not forget that 8ta has low coverage so if you move you’re screwed. Telkom playing their usual games. Thanks but no thanks!

  3. 8.ta… Cheers bra. You guys are hell expensive and STILL nothing to show for it. Start with your homeground. Get the coverage right and drop the prices, then MAYBE we can get the service we get from the big boys. WHOOSH… I’m off

  4. @Minnaar Pieters, I think you better revise your headline to “8TA Rapes broadband users… Again”

  5. Try £8 or +/- R100 p/m for 20mbps uncapped with wireless and free landline calls. That’s getting closer to the global mark you need to aim for.

  6. Is there a word like ‘once-off’ ? I am sure it should be ‘one-off’ (A happening that occurs only once (On one occasion) and is not repeated) and once (As soon as) we agree on that we should rather refrain from using ‘once-off’. Just a thought!

  7. 8ta is playing with numbers. they just wanna beat their competitors with less offering. prices should be ridiculous down in a way that competitors have a headache by just seeing them.

  8. MTN network coverage fo far the BEST in all Provinces
Vodacom Network is a problem to Province like Limpopo, eastern Cape etc
    Cell C network rocking
    8ta Network is a Problem
so if all this service providers can wary of their loop holes then will enjoy having all four starter Packs.

    1. I got my wife a 8ta contract last month and its a bargain. I paid R299/m for my landline rental and get R250 worth of airtime for her cell, all included in that R299. Her cell use the MTN network although its an 8ta contract.

      1. Just check your Telkom bill very carefully when you get it.  I recently got that landline/Blackberry offer, and how they arrived at the scary totals on the account, I don’t know.  I still need to check with them.  Just warning you.

  9. i was an 8ta client…
my dongle was stolen… so i bought another one… paid for 1G data at R250…
    but it didn’t work…
went backwards and forwards many times to the ‘shop’… no one could work out what was wrong…
they were on the phone to all the experts and call centers and escalated to whoever…
i suggested maybe the sim was faulty… no way i was told…
eventually after 10 days… one guys tries various things and comes to the conclusion that the sim is faulty…
cool… no problem i said… just give me a new sim and load the Gig onto it and bob’s your granny…
no way they said… they “can’t” reimburse money for data… i have to pay for another gig…
spoke to the manager, area manager, someone on the call centre, that someone’s boss… no one would give me the name of the relevant suit in telkom…
but all said that can’t or would not refund my money that i had paid them for data on a brand new sim off their own shelves…
of course i took my business to vodacom… but i don’t have the time or money to pursue   the loss of 250 bucks…
    but… i tell everyone… and am doing so now…
telkom and 8ta are a bunch of dishonest thieves… no more no less…
    THIEVES…!!

  10. MTN promo: R149 for 2gigs with a dongle 24 months… what a lame article… nice 1 Minnaar!!

  11. Does MR Pieters care to defend his post? I wonder how much 8TA paid him to put up this post? Its doing more damage than good for them. Just the way I like it : )

    1. Please explain to me what I need to defend? No one paid me, this is based on press releases that 8ta put out.
They decreased their pricing, and in many aspects beat the prices of other cellular networks – for example – go look at http://www.vodacom.co.za/personal/phonesandpackages/datapriceplans?packageTypeId=4
      Now relax.

        1. So was I. your quote “ Now we have to wait and see to see if the other cellular networks will match this offering”. Go check out Cell C and IBurst, they are MUCH cheaper!

  12. These are their standard packages. Their Go Big promos are still the best valus for money in SA.

  13. In December i bought a 20gig package from vodacom for R500.00 which also gave me access for 2 months

  14. We took out 4 Contracts with 8Ta in our companies name, I am the RICA representative for our company. For the past 3 months they have been sending us bills made out to Myself, i have spent hours on the phone with them trying to resolve this. The account is under the companies name! They still have not rectified this. I have given up talking to them. Logged calls on hellopeter and they just give you a reference number with no way of following it up! USELESS company!

  15. I use the go big 3gig deal and it works perfectly. It’s a promotion running until end march much like the man 2g at R 149. Just make sure that you have 8ta coverage as this special only runs off their own network and not when you roam on MTN.

  16. Obviously the writer of this article is employed by 8ta’s marketing dept. It is very misleading.

  17. Hi guys,
I would just like to add that I have the 10gb 8ta bundle and have been using it for the past few months now.
Had a bit of coverage issue, but a external antenna on my huawei modem quickly sorted that out.
Some of you guys seemed very peeved off so just thought I’d let you know.
P.S I am a big fan of MTN and Vodacom, It’s just this (3G) deal is the cheapest on the market at the moment and I’m happy so far.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Jaques, I am also an happy 8.ta customer, except I cant get good coverage/speed. Would you mind giving me more info on the external antenna please. Calvin

  18. Mr Pieters, don’t mind all these trolls. I’m sitting here laughing at the guys accusing you of favouritism.
That said I am currently battling to get the 3g set up on either my 3g router or galaxy tab. Called support… Got cut off because the reception was worse than at a monkeys’ wedding.
Anyway, if I succeed ill let you know.
Ps: stumpled upon your blog googling for help – I like it. Gonna subscribe to RSS
