  1. Waited for the clock to strike 12 last night and got my 3G iPhone at Nashua Mobile at Vodaworld. Well worth the wait!!

  2. Im glad the iphone is finally here.. now everyone can have one !! Altho, I heard they have seriously limited stock
I have the old iPhone – guess my party trick days are over

  3. that pricing structure is bullshit. How does vodacom justify charging double the price for the iphone. blackberry here I come

  4. Ya, I agree. The whole launch campaigh in the US was “twice the speed – half the price”. If the US can retail at $199 where do Vodacom get heir crazy prices from?
They should be free on almost any package. I suppose when the demand is there they will charge whatever they like and still get sales!

  5. The reason for the stock shortage is that the truck with the first 600 iPhones on was hijacked the day of the launch. I kid you not. 600 x the average of R5000 per phone = R3.5 million !! Great that in all the countries of the roll-out we’re the ones to have a hijacking.
Watch out for ad’s of private saless – you’re probably going to be fleeced in the end!

  6. From 200 dollars in the USA to 4 times the price in South Africa , Cant Trevor Manuel step in and stop this abuse of power.”Business Contract ” for “business people” , dont make me swear.I would love one as I am a big fan of the MAC even though I dont have one yet.
PLEASE VODACOM,RETHINK YOUR PRICING ON THIS PHONE AS YOU ARE ALIENATING LOTS OF YOUR CUSTOMERS , INCLUDING ME.

  7. VERY MUCH OVER PRICED!!!! WHAT A JOKE. WHAT A DISASTER FOR THE ORDINARY MAN. TAKE THE IPHONE BACK TO THE USA. HOW ON EARTH CAN… I GUESS VODACOM HAS TO MAKE SOME MONEY OUT OF THE HYPE. WOULD RATHER GET AN OMNIA…

  8. I just got an iPhone and I put my MTN Sim in the phone and it works gr8 . No hack needed . I just wanted to know if this is ment to be? or has apple forgot to lock the phone.

  9. for the 100th time – its $199 with a contract in the US … WITH A CONTRACT !!!
    @dave
There is a hatch at the top of the iphone that slides open – its a mission tho

  10. @iphone
Thanks for the sim card explanation.
Yeah, people stop your crying, the iphone is selling for around $275 here and I’m sure the extra $75 has to do with import fees and taxes.

  11. What a wonderful phone! I really love it. What I don’t love is the fact that no ones tells you, is that you can’t download any cool apps from the app store because they aren’t available in SA. So now I have an awesome phone that I can’t pimp with apps!!
    That sucks

  12. Current Rand dollar exchange rate R8.24 to 1US$. The cost of the 16GB 3G iPhone works out to $918(R7569) and the 8GB works out to $775(R6389)if you do the conversion.
Go ask for you school fees back DAVE. $275 + $75(for your eleged taxes) = $350
where has the other $568 gone ?
WE pay double for 8GB and nealry tripple for 16GB.

  13. My friend switched from iphone to iphone 3g. But he has to pay $10 more every month for a full two years contract, which means total of $240 more.
    $199 + $240 = $439
Is the new iphone 3g really cheaper?

  14. Vodacom are a bunch of capitalist pigs. I already have a old iphone and don’t need the 3G, but I will now definately be moving my contract away from vodacom due to this pathetic bullshit scam they are trying to pull here.

  15. What a Ripoff from Apple, can’t wait till someone bring a perfect clone at a quarter of the price. The Contract fees are absurd.

  16. @ wayne
I was just saying that the $199 in the States is for a two year contact, so the cost of an iPhone with a two year contact is only R2189 = $265. $65 extra isn’t that big of a price to pay to have the iPhone in SA.
Yes, the price for the iPhone without a plan here is very high, but in the States you can’t even get one unless you buy a plan.

  17. ..with any decent contract you can get the iphone or any other sought after phone for next to nothing…
    on Vodacom Talk500 package
    iPhone
    8GIG – R1799 Upfront or R74 p/m
    16GIG – R2899 Upfront or R144 p/m
    not bad…

  18. I have an Iphone 2G, it runs beautifully on MTN, although most developers are making new apps for hacked 3G iPhones. If you get a phone from vodacom they will completely void your warrantee if u hack it… Unhacked its useless as u have to pay in dollars for all your apps($=R11) I’ll stick to my hacked Version1.1.4. With 1000’s of free apps at the touch of a screen Enjoy getting shnyed by vodacom;)

  19. Topic of your article is very interesting, i have bookmarked your blog
    regards
    fluflaken

  20. i have heard from many ppl that the iphone 3GS is locked to vodacom. is this true?
‘coz i have an MTN sim card and would really like to buy the iphone 3GS but they say i cant ‘coz im not using vodacom… pls help me on this one.
    thanks

  21. I got the Iphone 32gig 3GS and I tried to jailbreak it and well what do you know its unhackable. Well at least unhackable and still fully operational.
Thats because the obnly hack I can do is one where i can switch the phone off and that sucks.
On Vodacom and the warranty issue. How will Vodacom void the warranty when the phone restores so easily?
