Apple testing four smart glasses designs to rival Meta Ray-Bans

Apple may be entering the wearable eyewear market later than its competitors, but new reports suggest the company is taking a highly customizable approach. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is currently testing four distinct frame styles for its upcoming smart glasses, internally codenamed N50.

To appeal to a broad range of users, Apple is reportedly experimenting with a variety of shapes and colours. The prototype lineup includes:

  • Classic Rectangular: A bold design comparable to the iconic Ray-Ban Wayfarer.
  • Slim Rectangular: A more understated look, similar to the frames worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
  • Oval/Circular Options: Both large and small variations to accommodate different face shapes.

The glasses are expected to launch in a palette of colours, including Black, Ocean Blue, and Light Brown.

While the N50 glasses will compete directly with the Ray-Ban Meta second-generation model, Apple is looking to differentiate through design and software. Rumours suggest the frames may feature unique “vertically oriented oval lenses” accented by surrounding lights.

The primary value proposition lies in deep iPhone integration. While the glasses will capture photos and videos, they are designed to function as a seamless extension of the iOS ecosystem

  • Seamless Syncing: Streamlined editing and sharing of media directly to iCloud.
  • Enhanced Siri: The launch may coincide with a major Siri overhaul expected in iOS 27, offering more advanced voice control for calls, music, and notifications.

Apple is reportedly eyeing a reveal as early as the end of 2026 or early 2027, with a consumer release slated for later in 2027. This timeline gives Meta further room to establish its lead; the social media giant recently updated its own lineup to better support prescription lenses and more customizable fits.
