Honda took a major step toward commercializing solid-state battery technology by entering a strategic partnership with US battery developer QuantumScape. The collaboration follows Honda’s decision to cancel the North American launches of three planned electric vehicles, the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX, a setback that contributed to the automaker’s first annual financial loss in nearly 75 years. The deal signals a clear shift in Honda’s electric vehicle strategy, placing solid-state technology at the centre of its long-term roadmap over existing lithium-ion platforms.

The partnership focuses on co-developing solid-state lithium-metal batteries alongside scalable manufacturing processes. By leveraging the San Jose-based research firm’s technical expertise, Honda aims to unlock substantial improvements in driving range, charging speeds, production costs, and battery safety.
The agreement follows a similar deal QuantumScape struck with Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary, PowerCo SE, underscoring growing automotive industry confidence in QuantumScape’s ability to deliver market-ready solid-state cells.
During initial technical evaluations, QuantumScape’s solid-state architecture demonstrated clear advantages over conventional battery designs.
“QuantumScape’s solid-state technology platform demonstrated compelling and unique advantages during our technical study. This partnership has the potential to add value across a wide range of applications,” said Atsushi Ogawa, COO at Honda R&D’s Research Centre of Excellence.
While Honda views the technology as a vital driver for its future EV lineup, QuantumScape is also positioning its solid-state cells to power other energy-intensive emerging sectors, including data centres, drones, and robotics. For Honda, going all-in on solid-state battery development serves as a crucial pillar in its overarching goal to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050.
