Sony has announced a beta test for cloud streaming on its PlayStation Portal handheld gaming device, marking a significant step forward for the platform. The feature will roll out in a software update this week, starting in the US and Europe. Initially, only PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will have access to the cloud streaming beta, a long-awaited development that addresses a key critique of the Portal since its launch: the lack of a clear audience or standout functionality.

The beta will include over 120 titles from the PS5 Plus Game Catalogue, offering a diverse selection of games such as Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. However, games from the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 libraries are not part of this initial test, though they may be added when the feature becomes more widely available.
This update also includes minor adjustments to audio and volume controls, but the introduction of cloud gaming is undoubtedly the headline feature. It has the potential to significantly enhance the PlayStation Portal’s appeal by allowing users to stream games directly from the cloud, eliminating the need to rely solely on a local PS5 connection.
While it’s taken Sony over a year to implement this feature, the beta rollout is a promising indication of the company’s commitment to improving the Portal’s functionality. If successful, cloud gaming could transform the device into a compelling option for gamers seeking flexibility and portability in their PlayStation experience.
