Microsoft is introducing a new AI feature in Notepad called “Rewrite.” According to The Verge, Microsoft is rolling out a preview of Rewrite for Windows Insiders, allowing the AI to rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify text length directly in Notepad.

Windows Insiders can try Rewrite by highlighting text in Notepad, then right-clicking or using the Ctrl+I shortcut. This opens a dialogue box with AI-generated suggestions for the selected text, along with customization options like “Longer,” “Tone,” and “Format” above the “Replace” button. For those who prefer a traditional writing experience, the AI feature can be disabled in the app settings, per Microsoft’s official Windows blog.
Microsoft Paint is also getting AI-powered tools called Generative Fill and Generative Erase. With Generative Fill, users can draw a selection box and add visual elements by describing what they’d like to see in that area. Meanwhile, Generative Erase lets users remove parts of an image by selecting them with a “generative erase brush,” accessed via the eraser tool.
After four decades, Notepad only recently added spell check, yet AI tools like Rewrite and image generation in Paint are arriving in just a few months. It’s remarkable how quickly these new AI capabilities are reshaping classic tools.
