Apple has updated its accessories – with USB-C

Apple is finally saying goodbye to the Lightning port on its Mac accessories lineup. The Cupertino company introduced updated versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad, all featuring USB-C. These new models are available individually through the Apple Store and come in either black or white. Despite the change to USB-C, the accessories retain their original designs—and yes, the Magic Mouse still charges from a USB-C port on the bottom, a much-criticized choice.

The pricing remains consistent with the previous Lightning versions: the Magic Mouse is $99, the larger Magic Keyboard with a numpad is $199, and the Magic Trackpad is $149. While a shift to USB-C has been expected for some time, it aligns all of Apple’s Mac and iPad devices with a single charging standard, eliminating the need for USB-C-to-Lightning cables.

The shift was likely influenced by pressure from EU regulators, who urged Apple to adopt a universal charging standard. This led to the first USB-C iPhone in 2023 and, more recently, an updated version of the AirPods Max with USB-C. With today’s update, Apple’s entire desktop accessory lineup now supports the USB-C standard, which became the primary connectivity port for all Mac desktops and laptops by 2018 and for iPads shortly thereafter.

Over the last few years, Apple had several opportunities to make this change, with significant product releases including the M1 Mac Mini in 2020, the M1 iMac in 2021, and the Mac Studio in 2022. Each time, Apple opted to retain the Lightning port for accessories. Today’s release signals a final push toward USB-C across Apple’s ecosystem, leaving the iPhone SE as the last major device still using a Lightning port.
