Starting October 15th, creators will be able to upload YouTube Shorts that are up to three minutes long, a feature that YouTube says has been highly requested. Currently, TikTok allows videos as long as 10 minutes, having steadily increased its time limit over the years.

In addition to the longer video option, YouTube is introducing a new template feature that allows creators to reuse the format of other Shorts. This feature lets creators match their clips to trending sounds from other videos, similar to TikTok’s preset video styles, where users can tweak their own clips based on their preferences. The template option, accessible via the “remix” button on videos, makes it easier to participate in trends or replicate popular editing choices. However, these tools can lead to content feeling repetitive as many creators follow the same trends. Instagram Reels also has a similar template feature for quickly replicating editing styles.

YouTube has been aggressively promoting Shorts as a TikTok alternative, continuously adding features and investing heavily in creators to drive the production of short-form content. However, YouTube also recognizes that some users prefer longer videos, the type of content YouTube is traditionally known for. In response, the platform is adding a “show fewer Shorts” option, allowing users to temporarily reduce the number of Shorts videos in their home feed.

These updates reflect YouTube’s balancing act between catering to the short-form content craze while maintaining its stronghold on long-form video creation, aiming to offer users a mix of both formats based on their preferences.
