South African Luno customers can now use their cryptocurrency assets to make real-world purchases, thanks to a new partnership with Zapper. Zapper’s QR codes are widely recognized across the country at physical points of sale and online platforms. Additionally, Zapper enables tap-to-pay solutions for merchants using NFC-enabled Android smartphones or tablets.

Through this partnership, Luno users will be able to make crypto payments at over 31,000 merchants in South Africa, including well-known retailers like Dis-Chem pharmacies and fuel stations.
Tarris Arnold, Luno’s business development manager, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to be the first crypto asset service provider in South Africa to partner with Zapper. This allows our customers to use the Luno app to pay wherever Zapper QR codes are accepted.” Arnold added that while crypto investment is currently the primary use case in South Africa, this development brings the country closer to the original goal of using cryptocurrency for everyday purchases.
Luno customers can complete transactions using their crypto reserves by scanning a Zapper QR code via the Luno app, whether online or at physical locations. Payments can reach up to R100,000 per transaction.
Mike Bryer, CEO of Zapper, highlighted the benefits for merchants, stating, “Our mission is to help Zapper merchants grow their businesses. By collaborating with Luno, we are adding over 5 million more South African users to our payment network.”
This partnership simplifies crypto payments, eliminating the need for vouchers or converting cryptocurrency to Rands. Users can simply scan a QR code, making the process more practical and accessible.
Cryptocurrency as a payment method has been gaining momentum globally. In July, Binance reported a 26.5% increase in crypto transactions over six months, with purchases ranging from everyday items to larger goods.
Luno customers can utilize various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Tether, and XRP. However, it’s recommended that users confirm Zapper support at a merchant before making a purchase.
