DStv fibre packages fail and have been discontinued

MultiChoice has discontinued its DStv Internet fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products, including bundled offers that combined Premium or Compact subscriptions with entry-level home fibre packages at discounted rates.

DStv Internet launched FTTH products in October 2022, following the introduction of fixed-LTE products a year earlier. The company partnered with South Africa’s largest fibre network operators (FNOs) to offer these packages.

Pricing for standalone FTTH packages started at R549 for a 25/10Mbps connection, aligning with other Internet service providers (ISPs). Bundled offers provided significant value, with discounts compared to purchasing individual FTTH and DStv subscriptions.

For example, a bundled offer with a DStv Streama box, Wi-Fi router, 25/10Mbps fibre connection, and DStv Premium streaming-only package was priced at R999 per month. This effectively reduced the price of the DStv Premium streaming service by R346 to R472.

Another bundled option combined the same box and fibre connection with a Compact subscription for R699 per month, offering a similar discount.

Unfortunately, these options are no longer available to new customers. MultiChoice has removed all mention of fibre products from its website, and web pages previously containing fibre details now display a “page-not-found” error.

The company has explained that they have paused fibre sales and focused their efforts on fixed-LTE products due to customer demand. However, they plan to review DStv Internet offerings as customer needs evolve.

MultiChoice is also launching a new DStv Internet and Showmax bundle in October 2024, offering customers a combined package at an attractive price point.

DStv’s fixed-LTE offers start at R199 for 25GB anytime and 25GB night-time data with a ZTE router. While these products have been available since September 2021, their entry-level options may not compete well with other ISPs. For example, Axxess offers a 40GB anytime data fixed-LTE package for the same price, and a 20Mbps uncapped package for slightly more.

However, DStv Internet’s top-end 400GB package is significantly cheaper than Axxess’s comparable option.
