Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, a more powerful version of its popular gaming console. The PS5 Pro features a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and custom AI-driven upscaling, offering enhanced performance and visual fidelity.

Priced at $699.99, the PS5 Pro will be available starting November 7th. It maintains a similar design to the PS5 Slim, with three stripes on the side and no built-in disc drive. A 4K Blu-ray disc drive can be purchased separately, and optional console covers are also available.
The PS5 Pro boasts a 45% faster rendering speed compared to the original PS5, allowing for improved detail and frame rates. This enhanced performance enables players to prioritize either visual fidelity or performance modes without sacrificing the other.
The console features a GPU with 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the standard PS5. These upgrades contribute to the improved rendering capabilities and support for higher frame rates in games.
The PS5 Pro also introduces Sony’s new AI-powered PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature, which enhances image quality and frame rates using upscaling techniques similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. PSSR replaces existing temporal anti-aliasing or upsampling implementations in games.
Sony has demonstrated several games running on the PS5 Pro, including The Last of Us Part II, which now offers more detail while maintaining 60fps. Titles like Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and others will also benefit from the PS5 Pro’s enhanced capabilities.
The PS5 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, VRR, and 8K resolutions. Additionally, it includes a larger 2TB solid-state drive and an extra USB-C port.
To take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s features, games will need to be patched. Sony is preparing software updates for over 50 titles, including Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
The PS5 Pro is compatible with the PlayStation VR2 headset, which will support higher-resolution games. Existing PS5 controllers and network services will remain unchanged. Preorders for the PS5 Pro will begin on September 26th, with the console launching on November 7th.
