The second-generation AirPods Pro have included hearing health features for some time, but with iOS 18, Apple is expanding these capabilities by introducing Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection. These tools now offer a comprehensive approach to hearing health, focusing on awareness, assistance, and prevention. It all starts with a “clinically validated” hearing test that users can take independently.

Apple has reimagined the traditional hearing test many experienced as children—sitting in a booth, raising a hand when a sound is heard. Now, with just AirPods Pro and an iPhone, this test can be conducted in any quiet environment, offering a convenient alternative to doctor visits and specialized equipment.
To access this feature, go to your iPhone’s Settings, tap into the AirPods Pro settings, and find the Hearing Health section. The system first checks if your AirPods fit properly and if your location is quiet enough for an accurate test. Once the Hearing Test begins, active noise cancellation (ANC) is activated, and you’ll tap your iPhone screen when you hear tones from the earbuds. Apple developed this test using 150,000 real-world audiograms and millions of simulations, ensuring that it’s quick, easy, and accurate.
After the test, immediate results will appear on your phone, indicating the level of hearing loss, if any, in each ear. For minimal hearing loss, the system may suggest adjustments to Media Assist settings, enhancing audio for entertainment and calls. For mild to moderate hearing loss, the new Hearing Aid feature on AirPods Pro may be recommended to improve daily hearing.
I experienced a brief walkthrough of the Hearing Test following the iPhone 16 event. While I didn’t take the actual test, the process appeared to be as quick and simple as Apple claims, taking about five minutes to complete. Results are stored in the Health app for easy tracking, and you can retake the test anytime.
Hearing Aid is designed for mild to moderate hearing loss, enhancing certain frequencies on AirPods Pro. It allows customizable amplification, balance, and tone, helping users hear better in conversations, music, videos, and calls. For severe hearing loss, the software advises consulting an audiologist.
