Powered by the new A18 chip with a 3nm process, the iPhone 16 offers improved performance and battery life. The device also boasts enhanced water and dust resistance, an Action Button, satellite messaging (initially available in the US and Canada), Wi-Fi 7, improved thermal design for gaming, and a new physical Camera Control button.

The A18 chip features six performance cores and four efficiency cores, delivering a 30% increase in CPU speed and a 30% reduction in power consumption. The GPU is 40% faster and 35% more energy-efficient, contributing to the iPhone 16’s extended battery life. This performance boost enables the iPhone 16 to support demanding games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4.

The iPhone 16 will be Apple’s first mainstream phone to utilize Apple Intelligence in beta, following an update scheduled for October. This AI software, initially available only on Pro-level iPhone 15 models, offers features like custom emoji, text summarization, and Visual Intelligence. Visual Intelligence allows users to search for information based on what the camera sees.

The iPhone 16’s dual-camera setup includes a 48-megapixel main camera and a new autofocusing ultra-wide camera. With a 2x crop mode and macro mode, the camera system effectively offers the equivalent of four lenses.

Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus feature the same screen sizes (6.1-inch and 6.7-inch) and 60Hz refresh rate as the iPhone 15 generation. However, the displays on the iPhone 16 models can reach a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and go as low as 1 nit.

The iPhone 16 maintains the same general design as its predecessor, with a squared-off frame, rear glass for MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, Dynamic Island cutout, and a USB-C charging port. The return to a vertically aligned rear camera arrangement aligns with the iPhone 15 Pro models, enabling support for spatial photos and videos for Apple Vision Pro.

The iPhone 16 starts at $799 with 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899. Preorders will begin on September 13th, with the phones expected to be available on September 20th.
