LG’s stretchable displays, first unveiled at CES 2023, made another public appearance at a fashion show, as the company announced their participation in 2025 Seoul Fashion Week. The technology, now branded as “Stretchable” by LG, was showcased through various fashion items, including clothing and accessories.

These displays were integrated into the front of garments, sleeves, and clutch bags created by Korean designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee. “We have been able to design future fashion concepts with new materials that have never existed before,” said Park, reflecting the innovative potential of the stretchable display technology.
Unlike the foldable displays commonly found in smartphones, LG’s stretchable displays can be pulled, bent, and twisted, offering even greater flexibility. The substrate material is made from a silicon similar to that used in contact lenses, making the displays more supple. Additionally, they feature microLEDs smaller than 40 micrometres, serving as the light source. According to LG, these displays can stretch from 12 to 14 inches, expanding by roughly 20 percent.
Flexible wearable technology has long been a focus of research in fashion and other sectors, including concepts like invisibility cloaks. To explore their commercial potential, the South Korean government launched a national project aimed at testing wearable tech across various industries. The primary challenge has been developing materials that behave more like fabric than rigid plastic. With its stretchable displays, LG seems to have made significant progress toward overcoming this obstacle.
The potential applications of this technology go beyond just fashion, as flexible displays could be utilized in a variety of industries, offering a new level of integration between digital interfaces and wearable items. LG’s latest demonstration at Seoul Fashion Week marks a promising step forward in the evolution of wearable tech and fashion innovation.
