BritBox, the streaming service offering a wide range of British content, is shutting down its South African operations after less than three years. The platform will officially cease operations on August 30th, 2024, allowing existing subscribers to enjoy their favourite shows until then.

Launched in August 2021, BritBox South Africa aimed to provide a unique selection of British TV series, documentaries, and other programming. A spokesperson for BritBox stated their focus will now shift towards “more established markets” with higher growth potential.
While the specific reason for closure remains undisclosed, subscriber numbers likely fell short of expectations. The service cost R100 per month.
South African viewers can still access a variety of BBC programming through DStv, a satellite and streaming platform owned by MultiChoice Group. DStv offers channels like BBC Earth, BBC Brit, BBC Lifestyle, BBC UKTV, CBeebies, and BBC World News.
It’s expected that some of the previously exclusive BritBox content might find a new home on other South African platforms soon. Popular BritBox shows included titles like Unforgotten, Shetland, Vera, Doc Martin, and the British version of The Office.
