South Africa’s instant payment system, PayShap, is experiencing explosive growth. Launched in March 2023 by the South African Reserve Bank and BankServ Africa, PayShap has quickly become a popular choice for both banks and consumers.

All four of South Africa’s “Big Four” banks were on board at launch, and the system has since expanded to include six more, notably Capitec, TymeBank, African Bank, and Investec. This wide availability has fueled rapid adoption, with over 3 million users registering for a ShapID (a cellphone number linked to their bank account) within a year.

PayShap simplifies money transfers by allowing users to send and receive funds using just a cellphone number. This eliminates the need for complex bank account details, making transactions faster and more convenient. Additionally, PayShap facilitates instant payments between accounts at different banks, a feature previously limited or unavailable in some standalone bank offerings.

The numbers speak for themselves.  Just one year after launch, PayShap transactions reached a staggering 14 million, with a combined value of R9 billion. Banks are reporting significant surges in usage, with Capitec noting a 100% increase in monthly transactions between April 2023 and March 2024. Absa observed an even steeper rise, with a 188% increase in volumes between February and March 2024. Standard Bank and FNB echoed the trend, reporting strong overall adoption and steady growth.

Interestingly, PayShap seems to be influencing payment behavior. Standard Bank observed a decline in average transaction value, suggesting a rise in micropayments. FNB reported that 68% of their PayShap transactions fall under R500, with a significant portion being under R100. This indicates a growing trend of using PayShap for everyday purchases and small transactions.

The success of PayShap signifies a clear shift towards faster, more convenient payment methods in South Africa. Banks are optimistic about its future, with Absa planning to expand capabilities and FNB highlighting the increasing adoption by their personal banking segment.  With its speed, ease-of-use, and cost-effectiveness, PayShap is well-positioned to become the go-to solution for instant payments in South Africa.  While some banks, like Discovery Bank, didn’t disclose specific PayShap figures, their focus on real-time transactions suggests they are also aligning with this growing trend.
