Formula E isn’t waiting for the next generation car. Ahead of the Monaco E-Prix, the series unveiled the Gen3 Evo, boasting record-breaking acceleration and significant upgrades.

The Gen3 Evo claims the title of the fastest accelerating FIA single-seater ever, reaching 0-60 mph in a mind-blowing 1.82 seconds. That’s 30% quicker than a 2024 F1 car and a whopping 36% faster than the current Gen3 car – and these aren’t just theoretical numbers. Formula E has achieved these benchmarks on an actual track in Italy.
A key factor behind this speed boost is the series’ first foray into all-wheel drive (AWD). While Gen3 featured dual powertrains, the front one previously only served for energy regeneration. AWD will be active during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode, offering drivers more control and grip for even more exciting racing.
One of Gen3’s pain points, the fragile front wing, is getting a revamp. The Gen3 Evo features a redesigned, pointier nose and a sturdier front wing as part of a broader body overhaul. This not only improves durability but also enhances aerodynamics, potentially leading to closer battles on track.
Formula E is sticking with Hankook for tires, but the new version offers 5-10% more grip to handle the added power of AWD. This additional traction is crucial for drivers to maintain control during high-performance manoeuvres.
The Gen3 Evo tweaks unlock the full potential of the Gen3 platform. While the core electric race car with its impressive 90% energy efficiency and 600kW regenerative braking remains, qualifying lap times around Monaco’s challenging circuit could drop by two seconds thanks to AWD and a higher power mode.
Formula E reports enthusiastic driver feedback from closed-door testing sessions. Drivers like Pascal Wehrlein (Tag Heuer Porsche) and Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Penske) praised the car’s handling, with Vergne specifically highlighting its improvement over the current model.
The Gen3 Evo injects a shot of adrenaline into Formula E mid-season. With record-breaking speed, enhanced durability, and the strategic addition of AWD, the stage is set for even more electrifying races as the series speeds towards its future.
