This partnership not only grants Google access to a wealth of data but also provides valuable content for training its AI models. According to Google, this access enables them to comprehend Reddit content more effectively, enhancing the accuracy and relevance of their usage and display.

Last year, Reddit’s decision to charge developers for API usage sparked controversy, leading to the closure of several third-party Reddit clients and a widespread site protest. The platform cited concerns about large AI companies scraping data without compensation. However, Reddit clarified that the agreement with Google does not alter its existing API terms, which remain free for non-commercial use.

The timing of this collaboration coincides with Reddit’s anticipated public debut in the near future. Although specific terms of the Google-Reddit partnership were not disclosed, reports indicate that Reddit secured a licensing deal with a major AI firm valued at approximately $60 million annually. This figure was corroborated by Reuters, which initially reported Google’s involvement in the deal.
