Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios, commented on this remarkable achievement during the Minecraft Live 2023 event, stating, “As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks.”

The announcement of this new milestone took place at Minecraft Live 2023, a livestream event dedicated to Minecraft that features news, community updates, and an engaging voting event, where players can cast their votes to decide which new creature should be incorporated into the game. This year, the options include a crab, an armadillo, and a penguin. I personally voted for the penguin because of its undeniable cuteness.

The sale of 300 million copies of Minecraft is a remarkable accomplishment, surpassing the sales of nearly every other form of entertainment media since records began. To put it into perspective, the best-selling album of all time, Thriller, has sold around 70 million copies. The best-selling console, the PS2, sold approximately 155 million units.

Even the second best-selling video game of all time, Grand Theft Auto V, falls significantly short of Minecraft’s extraordinary numbers, with reported sales of 185 million copies. Minecraft remains unrivalled and is expected to maintain its unique status for a significant period, or at least until the release of Half-Life 3.
