Rain hit with criticism amid ultimatum and layoffs

Rain, a mobile network operator in South Africa, has recently faced criticism and allegations of retrenching dozens of employees as part of its transition from a Johannesburg headquarters to a regional branch in Cape Town. This move contradicts previous promises by the company that the transition would not result in job losses.

According to a source with knowledge of the matter, over 100 employees were effectively retrenched after they refused to relocate to the new headquarters in Cape Town. The employees were allegedly given an ultimatum to either move or face retrenchment, without being offered salary increases for positions in the new city. Furthermore, the source claimed that the employees did not have proper representation during the Section 189 retrenchment process, as the consultation appeared to be a mere formality, led by the COO, CFO, and a seemingly non-existent human relations office.

Rain confirmed that 54 employees were indeed dismissed but maintained that the process was conducted in compliance with the Labour Relations Act. The company stated that new roles were established, and affected employees had the opportunity to apply for these newly created positions. They clarified that the Johannesburg office would not be closing but would become one of several regional branches, including those in Durban and Port Elizabeth. Rain expressed their commitment to investing in South Africa and creating more job opportunities as they expand their 5G and national 4G mobile networks.

Despite these assurances, the layoffs have sparked concerns among employees, as Rain had previously assured that no Johannesburg employees would lose their jobs due to the headquarters move. Earlier, there were also concerns about job security after Rain outsourced customer support to India-based Wipro in November 2022.

The situation has raised questions about the company’s handling of the transition and the treatment of its employees. The assurance of job security during restructuring is crucial for employee morale and trust in the company. As Rain moves forward with its regional branch strategy, it will need to address the concerns raised by employees and work towards a transparent and fair process to retain trust and loyalty among its workforce.
