MultiChoice South Africa has slashed the prices of its DStv streaming plans, including DStv Premium, which sees a 17 percent decrease. All of the plans offered for the streaming only options have been decreased in price drastically. The price cuts take immediate effect, and comes after the criticism levied at MultiChoice for charging the same for its “dishless” services compared to its satellite products.

Here is a full rundown of the reduced prices for the streaming offerings:
- R699/month for DStv Premium, compared to R839/month for satellite — a 17 percent decrease
- R469/month for DStv Compact Plus, compared to R549/month for satellite — a 15 percent decrease
- R369/month for DStv Compact, compared to R429/month for satellite — a 14 percent decrease
- R269 for DStv Family, compared to R309/month for satellite — a 13 percent decrease
- R99/month for DStv Access, compared to R120/month for satellite — an 18 percent decrease
Showmax Pro has also seen a big decrease in pricing. MultiChoice has announced that the price of Showmax Pro is decreasing by 22 percent, from R449/month to R349/month. The upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar will stream on Showmax Pro, but it also includes other entertainment offerings. It has live sport from SuperSport, live music and news channels. Football on offer includes the Premier League, DStv Premiership, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Nations League and the Fifa World Cup.
The price for Showmax Pro Mobile remains unchanged at R225/month.
MultiChoice is also gearing up the launch of its fibre broadband offering on 1 October, which will come to market through its DStv Internet business. MultiChoice didn’t immediately provide details about its fibre offerings — they will be announced next week, group CEO Calvo Mawela said.
It will be interesting to see if the new pricing can stem the outflow of subscribers, or at least convert them to streaming clients.
