iPhone 14 Plus: Everything you need to know

At the Far Out event at the Apple Campus, the Cupertino firm took the wraps off its latest iPhone 14 models. While the iPhone 14 isn’t much different to last year’s iPhone 13, we do have one new addition to the line-up: the iPhone 14 Plus. This has come at the expense of the Mini version of the iPhone range, of course, having been a horrible seller for Apple. The iPhone 14 Plus is very similar to the aforementioned base model, but at a new larger size. Here is everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 Plus – what the new model brings and what it improves on the doomed model it replaces in the range.

Let’s start with that larger display – it comes in at 6.7 inches compared to the 6.1-inch panel on the standard iPhone 14 model. If you’re someone who tends to consume a lot of content on their phone and wishes for a cheaper iPhone with a large screen (and the added battery life advantage), this is the device you want to purchase.

While the larger size may be exactly what some people wanted to be added to the standard iPhone model, it doesn’t have any additional features compared to its smaller sibling. The panel still refreshes at 60Hz and maintains a typical brightness of 800 nits, peaking at 1200 nits when viewing HDR content. It’s a shame that Apple hasn’t brought the ProMotion technology to these lower models (it won’t add much cost to manufacturing) – those displays reserved for the Pro models can decrease the refresh rate to 1Hz in order to save more battery life.

As is the case with its smaller sibling, the iPhone 14 Plus comes with last year’s A15 Bionic chipset rather than the new A16 Bionic. Rumours stated that Plus version would have slightly more RAM than the standard version, though Apple didn’t confirm this at its launch. As for storage variants, the options remain the same. Users can pick between 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Design-wise it is identical to the standard version, just bigger (obviously). The back panel features the glossy finish with a matte and contrasting shade on the metal sides. Then there’s the angled dual lens setup in the left top corner. While the notch is the smaller one from last year’s models, it still looks rather big on this Plus model. The iPhone 14 Plus has the same colour options as the standard model, namely Black, White, Red, Blue, and Purple.

On the camera front it is the same as on the 14. It is the same setup as on last year’s iPhone 13 Pro models, meaning the main 12MP sensor get an upgrade. It has better low-light performance. This wide-angle sensor is the same as on last year’s iPhone 13 models.

As you would imagine, the iPhone 14 Plus is more expensive than its smaller sibling. It starts at $899 and goes up to $1199 for the highest storage 512GB model. The model it replaces, the iPhone 13 Mini, came in at $699 last year.
